Yoga nidra is based on both contemporary science and time honoured principles. It has its roots in ancient India, although variations of this practice exist within other cultures. In a yoga nidra session you will be guided to move step-by-step, to explore various states of consciousness. Some of the main goals are to develop muscular relaxation, mental expansiveness, emotional release and deep, restorative rest.
Within a yoga nidra session you will be helped to create an inner oasis of relaxation. Beyond relaxation, you can develop valuable skills for handling stress, tension and fatigue.
Yoga nidra sessions consist of:
- calming breath patterns
- progressive muscle relaxation
- guided imagery
- and the setting of positive intentions
This practice takes place in a relaxed state between wakefulness and sleep. This powerful state of mind is known for its impact on physical and mental rejuvenation, restoration and growth. As a comprehensive meditative and relaxation approach, this practice is particularly beneficial for those struggling with bouts of insomnia, stress, anxiety, irritability or depression.
Yoga nidra can help you with:
- physical and mental stress
- emotional balance
- deep rest and restoration
- increases resilience
- calms the nervous system
- improves heart rate variability
- enhances neuroplasticity
_ establishes better sleep patterns

What to expect from a yoga nidra session
Yoga nidra sessions are typically 30-45 minutes long. You will be laying down on your back in Savasana ( a relaxed position with your legs extended, your arms by your sides and your palms up). You will be guided to get comfortable and if appropriate, cover yourself with a blanket. Your head will be level and in alignment with your spine. Once the session is underway, you will be encouraged to follow the verbal guidance of the facilitator and enjoy the experience.
If you are interested in trying an individual yoga nidra session online or in-person please get in touch. Group sessions are held at My Rest Acupuncture and Wellness Studio in Vancouver, Canada.
